During the WWDC 2022 developer conference, Apple introduced a new version of the operating system iOS 16 for smartphones. One of the main innovations was a completely redesigned lock screen, but there are other interesting changes as well.
According to Apple, iOS 16 users are in for the biggest lock screen update in the entire operating system's existence. The company has added a lot of customization features. For example, you can change the font and color of the information in standby mode and add different styles to selected wallpapers. Plus, you can add widgets that let you quickly see your connected devices' charging status, weather, calendar events, and more without unlocking your iPhone.
To prevent notifications from overshadowing the wallpapers set on the lock screen, they are now displayed in a carousel at the bottom of the screen. An interesting innovation is the new Live Activities controls, which allow you to track various information in real time. For example, you can see the status of a called taxi or quickly find out the score of a football match.
And best of all, in iOS 16 you can create multiple lock screens, each with a unique style, widgets, and more.
Three long-requested features have been added to Messages. From now on, it will be possible to edit already sent messages. You can also cancel sending a message. Finally, the ability to mark conversations that need to be answered so you don't forget them has been added. Such conversations will be marked with a special icon and placed at the top of the list.
iOS 16 added seamless switching between dictation and typing using the keyboard. Both options will be available at the same time. For example, you can dictate a message and immediately continue writing it. Or select a piece of text and dictate another to replace it.
The Direct Text feature introduced in the past has received a major update. So, now you can copy and translate text not only from photos, but also from videos. To do this, just stop the video and click on the desired text. Plus, you can now simply click on an object in a photo to cut and paste it into a document or send it as a message.
The new Apple Pay Later feature has been announced, allowing you to split an already purchased purchase into four equal payments. Apple didn't go into details, but said it will work wherever Apple Pay is available. In addition, the company will not charge late payments and penalties for late payments.
Apple has given the CarPlay service a big update. It will now be able to display information on all the car's screens, essentially replacing the factory system. It will display the dashboard, maps and provide access to all vehicle control functions. In addition, the user can customize all this to his liking. For example, it will be possible to choose a more classic dashboard design and customize its style.
Among other things, the focus function has been improved: there is an opportunity to sort work and personal websites, messages, letters, etc. With Family Shares, you can share subscriptions with up to five other people, controlling what content your child can access. iCloud Photo Shared Library lets you create a shared photo album for up to five people, and you can set photos to be added to it just by taking photos. The company also radically updated the smart home management program.
The following devices will receive the iOS 16 update:
- iPhone 13 series;
- iPhone 12 series;
- iPhone 11 series;
- iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max;
- iPhone XR;
- iPhone X;
- iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus;
- iPhone SE (2020) and iPhone SE (2022).
